In 1990, Martin Salazar of Carpenters Local 619 started his career as a union construction worker with the Laborers’ union. Before joining, Martin worked non-union in risky conditions and without the security of union benefits, a situation that made him realize the value of union membership and the opportunities it could provide for him.
After 10 years with the Laborers, Martin decided it was time to explore other opportunities to expand his skillset by joining the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. As a Union Carpenter, he worked his way up from journeyman to foreman, and eventually became a superintendent for BNB Builders. Throughout his career, the WSRCC provided stability, good pay, and great benefits, allowing him to buy a home and provide for his family.
After more than 30 years in the industry, Martin advises others to join the Union because it has been a great career, “If you want to build a better life, the Union is the way to go.” For Martin, the Carpenters Union has been key to advancing his career and securing a solid future.
