Career Connections Success Story

Career Connections Graduates Show and Prove: Local 951 Apprentices Excel at UC San Diego Jobsite.

We recently checked in on a Southern California jobsite that is using three proud Career Connections graduates from Local 951. San Mar Construction brought on Mason Guysi, Andre Barrera, and Galy Gutierrez to help build a parking structure at the University of California San Diego. San Mar Superintendent Steve Sigler couldn’t be happier with his proteges. “They’re doing really well. They’re eager to learn; they want to hustle. They come out prepared, they know what to do, they’re ready to work!” says Sigler.

The Apprentices (Andre and Mason are both 2nd period, and Galy is an 8th period Apprentice) feel nothing but gratitude for the opportunity they’ve been given. “Being out here with older people… learning from them… their work ethic, their hustle, all that. I love that. I love seeing those guys doing all that,“ says Galy. Now that they have work hours under their belt, they fully appreciate the advantages that they have been given through the Career Connections courses.

“This class gives you a jump start in learning what hard work really is,” says Mason. “When I first met the instructor, he would always tell us stories about the concrete industry and I just found interest into that,” adds Andre. “We asked him if he could show us how to do concrete formwork. That was a big leap to get me started in the whole concrete formwork industry.”

Mason, Andre, and Galy are shining examples of what is possible with the guidance that the program provides in jump-starting careers in construction. Superintendent Sigler says “Absolutely will be hiring these kids in the future. They are turning out great product in what they’re doing, and it’s proven in the three people that I have here!”
