CIEF Design Build Competition 2024

WSRCC participated in the largest CIEF Design Build Competition to date.

Approximately 600 students from over 40 schools across Southern California participated in this year’s CIEF Design Build Competition. This event is not only showcased creativity and craftsmanship but also served as a platform to promote career awareness within the construction industry among high school students through hands-on experience in the construction process and a first-hand look at future opportunities in the industry.

This competition challenged students to design, plan, and construct a 96 sq. ft. structure, ranging from playhouses to tiny homes, many of which were donated to various organizations following the event. Union representatives were present to ensure safety and judge the completed projects.

The impact of this competition cannot be overstated. Last year, over 70% of students cited the program as influencing their decision to pursue a career in the built environment. Furthermore, 77% of students made valuable connections with industry professionals, learning about job opportunities, apprenticeships, internships, and mentorships. With a staggering 90% of students rating their experience as highly positive, it’s evident that the CIEF Design Build Competition is shaping the future of the construction industry by empowering the next generation of builders and designers.
