Local 661 partners with LA City Council President Nury Martinez.
Local 661 in Sylmar has partnered with LA City Council President Nury Martinez’s Kid’s First Program to build Mini-Lending Libraries for homeless children and families.
This program is designed as a safety net to assist families in real-time, identify specific areas of need with a focus on education and housing. The program’s aim is to help school-aged children succeed in and out of school and end the cycle of intergenerational poverty.
Carpenters from Local 661 built the house-shaped lending libraries that are placed in motels in Van Nuys and North Hills housing homeless families. They also built TV trays for doing homework and circular picnic tables for outside learning.
