From Convict to Carpenter
Local 1912 member, Ian Merkle, spent 8 years in the Arizona Department of Corrections. It was there that he got his first taste for carpentry.
When he was released from prison, Ian took an hourly job working long hours with little pay. Then, he was introduced to the United Brotherhood of Carpenters.
Ian became a Union Carpenter and his life completely changed.
He’s now a 7th Period Apprentice and mentor to other Union Carpenters. He also had his civil rights restored by the Arizona Supreme Court.
Ian is an inspiration to all that aspire to do better things.
