Doug Candido Is a first-generation Carpenter apprentice out of Local 1977. He’s always done things differently and at 18 he moved out of the house to as he puts it, “forge his own path.” He worked odd jobs here and there until getting introduced to carpentry in the non-union sector. He enjoyed the work but was still having to hold down two jobs to make ends meet.
One fateful night while working at his second job, a regular customer told him about the benefits of a career with the Carpenters and encouraged him to check out the Union Hall. Candido was interested but he was worried that he didn’t know anyone there. “Well, you know me… here’s my phone number,” was the man’s response. “Go down to the Union Hall and tell them you know me and that I have a job for you… and that changed my life forever and I’ve been working ever since. I’ve been blessed!”
Candido, who had been living in his car at the time was able to get an apartment withing three weeks of starting his first job with Kiewit. “Before the Union, obviously everything was in shambles. I wasn’t happy. I couldn’t find happiness in anything that I did… Now, I’m here working I’m having a great time. I’m making a wage. I’m able to live a good life.”
Candido, now cherishes all the little things that have changed. He’s able to provide for his family, he’s healthier and he’s happier. All of this was noticed by his father who told him, “You’ve changed so much. I’m proud of you.” In that emotional moment, Candido knew his efforts had been recognized and that he had made the right choice by becoming a Union Carpenter.
