Enrique Borbon, completed his studies before becoming a member of Local 196, getting his start in the trades with no prior experience in construction. He began working non-union alongside his uncle, where he encountered the industry’s darker side while learning the ropes in interior systems and drywall. Enrique soon realized that there was not a future in working non-union and joined the Carpenters Union as it offered better pay, benefits, and retirement plans compared to non-union work.
In 2005, he took the opportunity to advance his career by joining the Carpenters Union in Arizona. He later moved to Nevada for greater job prospects, where he completed his apprenticeship and became a Journeyman in Las Vegas.
For Enrique, the most valuable benefits are the Union’s medical insurance and pension, which provide long-term security and retirement. He emphasizes that many workers in non-union jobs lack retirement savings and medical coverage. In his case, the Union’s health benefits have been a lifeline, covering all of his son’s cancer treatment costs.
The Carpenters Union has significantly improved Enrique’s life by providing job security, better pay, and essential support through life’s challenges.
