On National Tradesmen Day, we honor the skilled tradespeople who build our communities.
Mike Nutter, a superintendent for Ghemm Company, has been a Union Carpenter for 13 years, but his journey started much earlier.
Growing up in Fairbanks, Alaska, Mike worked non-union for years, but it came at a cost. He lost two fingers in a non-union accident and found himself deep in debt from medical bills. “I was in debt for years,” Mike recalls. Since becoming a Union member, Mike has experienced stability and security. The Union’s healthcare benefits have been invaluable to him and his family. Everything changed when he joined the Carpenters Union.
The Western States Regional Council of Carpenters has opened new opportunities council-wide, helping isolated regions like Fairbanks grow their market share. Mike’s experience underscores the Union’s role in protecting workers: “In the Union, you have a group of people that care that you’re treated fairly.”
This National Tradesmen Day, we celebrate workers like Mike and the Unions that support them.
