Here is the SWMSRCC Top Three for the week of April 17th.

Local 1912 Hosts TFDOA Press Conference

Southwest Mountain States Regional Council of Carpenters, Arizona officials, and over 100 union members and workers united to take a stand against tax fraud and wage theft. Featured speakers included Daryl Davis-Ferra with the Department of Labor, Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone, SWMSRCC Regional Manager Fabian Sandez, and SWMSRCC President Frank Hawk. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes was also in attendance where she announced the creation of an internal task force to combat tax fraud in the construction industry. Construction industry tax fraud continues to steal billions from our communities, cheating workers from their wages, benefits, and their American dream.

Carpenters Hold Demonstration in DTLA

Armed with picket signs, orange vests, and bullhorns, over 50 Union Carpenters took a stand and demanded better working conditions and enforcement of fair practices at a Downtown Los Angeles job site. The demonstration took place in front of an active non-union job site where the contractor, Wallcraft Inc., has been previously accused of failing to legally classify workers, pay rest periods, over time, sick leave, and meet safety standards. Watch our recap here.

Univision 34 covered the demonstration and interviewed SWMSRCC Special Representative David Cordero. Click here to watch the segment.

Stand Up to Construction Industry Tax Fraud

Tax Fraud affects us all. When crooked contractors cheat the system, our communities are cheated out of millions in tax revenue. This impacts our schools, roads, emergency services, public safety, and other resources that benefit the community. It also contributes to wage theft, labor abuse, human trafficking, cheap wages, and brings an unskilled and unsafe workforce to our neighborhoods. It’s never been more critical to stand up against tax fraud. Watch this video to learn more.
