SWMSRCC Top Three: Week of August 7th

Here is the Top Three for the Week of August 7th.

Piledriving Industry Meeting

This week Local 562 invited our Piledriving signatory contractors for a dinner in Long Beach. Contractors and Local Leaders were joined by Suzanne Plezia, Senior Director of the Program Delivery Group in the Port of Long Beach Engineering Services Bureau. She discussed upcoming Port projects, which includes major infrastructure jobs coming down the pipeline. We look forward to the jobs that will ensure our Union Carpenters and contractors can work where they live, contributing to community wealth and ensuring the future of our members’ jobs, wages, and benefits.

Sisters in the House!

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, women numbered 10.9 percent of the entire U.S. construction workforce in 2022. To increase the number of women in the field, Riverside Local 951 hosted an open house event this Saturday to inform women about the opportunity to improve their lives through a career in the trades. The event was well attended, with over a dozen participants who were ready to learn what it takes to be a Union Carpenter. Fellow Sister and Build Better Carpenter, Julie Luu, facilitated the event, sharing information on the job opportunities, wages, and benefits of joining our Union. The event proved to be a success with the Local 951 team working together to share their advice, experiences, and knowledge with the participants.

Regional Drywall & Flooring Competition

Last Saturday, the SWMSRCC hosted the second round of qualifying competitions for the Drywall and Flooring Olympics. Southern California Locals in San Diego, Ontario, and Carson each hosted a Drywall Drag Race where the best of the best competed to complete a wall in record time. Join us on August 19th to see who will represent us at the District Finals.
