SWMSRCC TOP THREE: WEEK OF JANUARY 17

Here is the SWMSRCC Top Three for the week of January 17th.

U.S. Congressman Pete Aguilar Visits Ontario:

Southwest Mountain States Carpenters Local 909 hosted U.S. Representative Pete Aguilar (D, CA-31) for a tour of the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority I-10  Express Lanes Project.  The project puts Union Carpenters to work widening the existing Interstate 10 freeway between the Los Angeles and San Bernardino County line and Interstate 15. Once complete, the express lanes will reduce traffic congestion, enhance trip reliability, and provide long-term congestion management of the corridor in the Inland Empire.

“The bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will help fix our roads and bridges and put people back to work,” Rep. Aguilar said. “ The I-10 Express Lanes project is a perfect example of how this legislation can help our region: by creating good-paying jobs and improving the quality of life for residents throughout the Inland Empire. I am so proud to represent the working families of Local 909 and will continue to be a strong voice for jobs and economic opportunity in Congress.”

KABC-TV was on hand and covered the visit. Watch the clip Here.

SWRCC Operations in January:

With the current surge in COVID-19 cases the Council will revert to Zoom meetings with no large gatherings through January 25th. Please note, this means Local union meetings and Foreman/Steward meetings will be held virtually via Zoom.

At this time, Locals are allowing foot traffic, however, masks are required to be worn properly at all times.

Making a Wish Come True for a Santa Maria Girl:

Volunteer Carpenters from Local 805 built an 80-sqft. playhouse with the Make A Wish Foundation for Katalina Covarrubias.  Katalina was diagnosed with Lymphoblastic Lymphoma in 2020. Katalina’s wish was to have her own private bedroom – she currently shares with her siblings.  Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible inside the family home.  So, it was decided to give Katalina her private room in the backyard in a custom playhouse.  The playhouse will feature three distinct areas:  a music/dance area, a play area, and a “crafting corner” as Katalina loves doing crafts.   The playhouse is going to be appropriately named “Kids Koop.” The Carpenters laid the foundation in December and now they’re ready to build the playhouse.  KEYT and KKFX covered the event.
