SWRCC TOP THREE: WEEK OF JULY 26

Here is the SWRCC Top Three for the week of July 26th.

Helping To Build The Future of Navajo Nation

Volunteer Native Carpenters from Southwest Carpenters Local 1319 in Albuquerque have built a prototype Hogan at Window Rock to house homeless Veterans on Navajo Nation.  All the Carpenters volunteering on this project live on the Navajo Nation.

This Hogan will serve as a model for approximately 3,000 more Hogan units to be built across the Navajo Nation to house their homeless Veterans.

This project is a byproduct of millions of dollars given to the Nation by the federal government.

Both Southwest Carpenters Local 1319 in Albuquerque and Local 1912 in Phoenix have a long-established relationship with the Navajo Nation; both Locals have made regular food and water drop-offs when COVID was ravaging the Nation, and now helping to design and build the future home for their homeless Veterans.

KOAT-TV 7 was there to cover the event. Watch more here.

Supervisor Hilda Solis Recognizes Local 213 for Their Volunteerism

Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair, Hilda Solis, Supervisor to the First District recognized the Southwest Carpenters Local 213 for their volunteerism and commitment to making a difference in their community. This recognition took place at Rosemead Community Garden where Mayor Polly Low of Rosemead and organizations including CultivaLA the California Climate Action Corps Fellows were also in attendance.

In the spirit of volunteerism, Union Carpenters were on site to build a 10×12 tool shed for the community garden. We thank reliable Wholesale Lumber for their generous contribution. To learn more information about the Carpenters Union Participation Program and to get involved, click here.
