Local 1977’s First Pinewood Derby
Local 1977 hosted their first Annual Pinewood Derby. Members and their families showed up at the local hall to race their miniature non-powered wooden cars. There was a great turnout and a few winners. This wholesome family pastime will continue at Local 1977 for years to come.
Carpenters Lend a Hand to a Disabled Veteran
Neighbors of an elderly Vietnam veteran, Roger Cook, reached out to Carpenters Local 743 for help. A leak in Roger’s ceiling caused drywall damage that he couldn’t repair on his own. A team of Carpenter volunteers were happy to help him. Last week, the volunteers insulated, sheeted and taped Roger’s ceiling, repairing the damage that the leak caused. When it comes to helping members of our communities, our Carpenters show up!
Anchorage Assembly Recognizes National Construction Safety Week
Last week, Anchorage Assembly recognized National Construction Safety Week. In tune with Mental Health Awareness Month, Local 1281 Representative Gabe Shaddy-Farnsworth addressed the assembly with a speech emphasizing the need to include mental health as part of construction safety, as many in the construction industry struggle with mental wellbeing. While the job site poses physical risks to Carpenters, mental crises or addiction issues can put them in harm’s way at any given time or place.
