For decades, Hollywood was the leading hub for film and video production. Film and television production companies have since reached outside of the Golden State for ideal locales to expand studio space. Take Netflix Studios, for example. The production company purchased ABQ studios in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2018, transforming the humble eight-sound stage, 28-acre production site to an impressive 100-acre production compound, adding four additional sound stages, three mills, two auxiliary buildings, office space, and two backlots. The expansion project was a $1 billion investment, and sustainability was thoughtfully factored in with onsite solar and battery storage, geothermal heating and cooling, plus 50 electric vehicle charging stations. Over 200 Union Carpenters worked on the project, wrapping it up in June 2024. This studio expansion has made filming popular streaming programs, such as the fourth season of Stranger Things, possible.
