Skills USA Alaska hosted their 2024 State Convention in Fairbanks, Alaska last week, their first since 2019. AJ Sutton and Gabe Shaddy-Farnsworth, WSRCC Representatives and Josh Bolton, the Alaska Carpenters Training Trust Director were invited to judge the carpentry technical skills competition where seven high school students from across the state participated. The carpentry competition entailed framing a small structure with an entrance and including a ridge with hip rafters for a roof in under five hours.
The first-place winner, John Eaton, a 16-year-old from Kodiak, AK, will move on to compete in the national Skills USA conference in June this year. WSRCC is honored to partner with amazing workforce development programs like Skills USA, and we hope to participate in many more statewide competitions to come.
